Photos - 2003 - Newcastle - Hadrian's Wall
The Roman's invaded England long before it was fashionable and built this immense wall most of the way across the country starting at Newcastle and going all the way across to Carlisle in the Lakes District. The ruins of a fortress are on display near Newcastle. The old fortress occupied a space of about 5 acres which makes it a pretty substantial place. They have lots of artifacts that have been dug up in a little museum near the site. Unfortunately most of the stone blocks that were above ground level were appropriated by the locals over the years to build houses, barns, walls and no doubt many other fine stone structures of which they are so proud. Further excavation has uncovered a lot of the stuff including foundations and buildings that got covered in dirt sooner than the rest of the place and hence are more intact.
