Photos - 2003 - Newcastle - Castle and Priory at Tynemouth

John took me out to Tynemouth where there is an old castle and ruins of what would have been an amazing sandstone priory in it's day. The sandstone is not dealing well with the weather and I felt kind of guilty when I touched it and pieces of sand brushed off with my touch. This building won't be there forever and there were even signs of rocks having fallen out of their mortar over one of the doorways. The headstones in the cemetary are suffering the same fate under the onslaught of the environment. There is also a WWII gun emplacement at the end of the land. It overlooks the entrance of the Tyne river which runs into Newcastle and Gateshead.
