Photos - 2003 - Avesbury

On one of my aborted trips back to Exeter for the Special Constables training that I couldn't do because I ended up moving to Scotland I went to visit Avesbury with Simon Fryers. Avesbury is older than Stonehenge and in many ways much cooler. Sadly it also has a well documented history of how the locals exploited the natural resources left on their doorstep and many of the standing stones became fences and houses. At one point the locals started knocking them all over but stopped when they crushed one of the villagers in the process. The saddest part is that the centre of the village is right in the middle of this huge circle of stones. Nearby is a large pile of dirt estimated to have taken 18,000,000 man hours to construct. A very cool place and worth visiting.
